Fall is a beautiful time of year. And along with this beauty comes a steady decline in temperature and higher energy bills. Just like we need to throw on a hat as the temperature goes down, now is the time to check if you have adequate insulation in your attic. But how do you know if you have enough insulation or not?  Check out some of the information below.

How much insulation should you have?

In BC to maximize the efficiency and comfort of your home you are looking to have about R50.  If you have insulation less than 12 inches deep then you likely could use an upgrade your attic insulation. Also many  homes have uneven or stamped down insulation from work being done over the years or some areas of the home having simply no insulation at all.

What is R value?

R value is a measurement of a materials ability to prevent heat loss. The higher the R-value the better it is at insulating your space.

Why bother adding more insulation, is it worth it?

There are many good reasons to ensure you have good insulation in your home.   Not only does it lower your energy bills but it also helps to ensure you prevent certain moisture issues, you have better soundproofing, prevent frozen pipes if you happen to have them in your attic space, and you also end up with a much more comfortable home. Not just in the winter but in the summer months as well
