Do You Need to Remove Old Insulation Before Installing New?

We hear this question all the time from homeowners in Coquitlam, Surrey, Burnaby and the rest of the Vancouver Lower Mainland. If your attic already has some insulation in place, do you need to rip it all out before upgrading to R50?
At InsulationBC.com, our answer is simple. In most cases, the old insulation can stay right where it is. Here is what we look for and how we decide whether to remove or build on top.
1. The Condition of the Existing Insulation
If your existing insulation is dry, not moldy, and free of contaminants like rodent waste or moisture damage, we can usually add blown-in fiberglass right on top. This saves time and money without sacrificing performance.
2. Moisture or Mold Issues
If there is any sign of moisture damage, mildew, or mold in the attic insulation, we recommend a full removal before upgrading. Covering over damp insulation can trap humidity and lead to serious air quality and structural problems.
3. Rodents or Contamination
If pests have been active in your attic, the existing insulation may be soiled or flattened. Contaminated insulation should always be removed and the area cleaned before new material is added.
4. Type and Depth of Existing Material
Some older attics have a minimal layer of loose fill or batt insulation that can easily be topped up to reach R50. Others may have outdated materials like vermiculite, which must be tested or removed for safety reasons.
5. Ventilation and Airflow Considerations
Before adding new insulation, we assess your ventilation. If the existing insulation is blocking airflow, we may remove or reposition some sections to ensure your attic can breathe properly once the new material is added.
